Functional Endocrinology
In order to optimize and modulate human physiology it is important to understand the functions and alterations in metabolism and apply conservative therapies such as diet, nutrition and lifestyle changes. We should not use substitute hormones without considering the reasons related to our body's imbalance as well as the alterations that will be created by these alternate hormones. Functional endocrinology is meant to address the imbalances of our body and find positive ways in correcting them and bringing our body into homeostasis- or balance. But let us begin with the basics- what is endocrinology?
Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that deals with the endocrine glands and their hormones. Some of these glands are the pituitary gland, the thyroid, the adrenal glands and our sex glands. In general enocrinology doctors focus on identifying organs that are deficient or non-functioning and use pharmaceutical agent or hormone to replace, suppress, or support the dysfunctional endocrine system. Such a general study and treatment is appropriate for certain genetic disorders and disease patterbs that seriously alter hormone production or function.
Functional endocrinology, however, identifies alterations in the endocrine systems that are not in a disease state at the point of diagnosis. In the current medical model, these issues are not address until they have already become a disease. People that suffer from these pre-disease alterations of the endocrine systems suffer a wide range of symptoms ranging from fatigue to serious cases of depression.
